How to pick the right word

Often two words become more closely associated with one another. For example, it is more idiomatic to say right word than correct word, even though their meanings are basically the same.

I will show you how to use Google Ngram to find the most suitable word pairs for nouns/adjectives, verbs/adverbs, and nouns/verbs.

This program works by comparing the frequency of use, so you will need at least two items to compare. Therefore, if you are unsure about the phrase 'right word', ask yourself what a synonym of 'right' is. The answer can be found by simply Googling '[word] synonym'.

Now, with our two phrases, we want to type the following into Ngram: word=>right, word=>correct. The word order is important; it should be noun=>adjective, verb=>adverb, and verb=>noun.

In plain English, we are asking Ngram how frequently 'word' is associated with 'right' compared to with 'correct'. The result is shown below.
